2021 Annual Club Auction
This is September and that means the return of our annual auction for bonsai and bonsai-related items. This is a great opportunity to lighten your stock of bonsai containers, bonsai, pre-bonsai, and all sorts of bonsai-related materials. The corollary is that there will be plenty of bonsai and related material for you to add to your collection at this auction.
All members are invited to offer bonsai and bonsai-related items for auction. Offering items for auction is reserved for members of the Society. Of course, you are welcome to bid on items at this auction. The auction will be conducted in a single format, the Live Auction. The Silent Auction has been curtailed to simplify the administrative process during these unsure times. Replacing the silent auction we are offering the opportunity for members to sell bonsai and bonsai-related items from the “TRUNK OF YOUR VEHICLE”. All members can sell bonsai and related material in the parking lot prior to the auction. The AABS Board has decided that no fee will be collected from your sales.
Entrance to the Gardens involves a $5 fee or presenting a reciprocal membership with another Garden.
Due to the limited number of chairs available at the Hidden Lake Gardens, bring your own seating.
The success of our auction depends on assistance provided by our members. If you can help with the administration of the auction, contact Paul Kulesa at email@example.com.
The auction schedule is as follows:
- 9 AM – HLG Opens.
- 10 AM – Setup of the auction floor; setting up table and chairs.
- 11 AM – Private Sales of bonsai and related items in the parking lot.
- 11 AM – Registration of buyers, sellers, and auction items.
- 12 PM – Lunch.
- 1 PM – Live Auction begins.
- 3-3:30 PM – The program wrap-up.
When the live auction wraps up, payment for auction purchases will begin. The treasurer will accept your credit card for payment, along with a check, PayPal, and US currency. There are no provisions to accept payment for purchases prior to the conclusion of the auction. To eliminate the crush of purchasers wishing to pay right now, buyers will be called in succession by their Buyer ID Number, starting with #1.
Registering As A Buyer
If you intend to purchase bonsai or bonsai-related items at our auction, you must register as a Buyer. To streamline this registration process, you can prepare the form before you arrive at the auction. The Live Auction Buyer Sheet can be downloaded here. Fill in your name and contact information on each form. On the day of the auction bring your forms to the registration desk and you will be issued a Buyer ID # (a number 1, 2, 3, …) This Buyer ID # will identify and link you with your purchases. At the end of the live auction, we will accept payment for your purchases. Buyers will be called up individually to make their payments. Buyers who register early will be called first. Buyer ID #1 will be called first, followed by Buyer #2, #3, … Remember, payment can be made with US currency, a check written to Ann Arbor Bonsai Society, a credit card, or PayPal.
Registering As A Seller
I want to invite all members to participate in our annual auction. Selling of bonsai and bonsai-related items at our auction is reserved for members of the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society. All items you want to sell at auction should be clean and free of disease and insect infestation. If you intend to sell bonsai and/or bonsai-related items at the AABS Auction, you have to register as a Seller. You can prepare these forms before you arrive at the auction, this will streamline your registration process. The Live Auction Seller Sheet can be downloaded here. The 2021 Auction will only be a Live Auction. In broad terms, bonsai and bonsai-related items that are likely to draw significant interest and a minimum bid of $25 can be offered in the Live Auction. You can create a package of bonsai and bonsai-related items to reach that $25 minimum bid threshold. Keep in mind, if a minimum bid is not offered on any item or group of items, that item or items will be returned to you. No attempt to accept a bid less than $25 will be made. When you register your sale items at the auction site, you will be assigned a Seller ID. Put the Seller ID on your Live Auction Sheet(s). Items you want to sell in the Live Auction have to be individually listed on the Live Auction Seller Sheet. Provide your name, contact information, and list each item you want to sell at Live Auction under the heading, “Description of Auction Item”. Additional directions are found on the Live Auction Seller Sheet.
Labeling Your Auction Items
You must label each auction item offered at the Live Auction. This label should have a brief description of the item(s), your Seller ID, and the Item # as listed on the Live Auction Seller Sheets. As an example – If you are selling a group of four bonsai pots, your label will read, “4 pots R-3” (“R” is the Seller ID and “3” identifies the auction Item # as found on the Live or Silent Auctions Seller Sheets).
